“Most processes of change go wrong because we don’t start with a sober assessment of where we are.”

– Tony Uddin

How can churches reach out to their community and manage change faithfully in an increasingly cross-cultural context?

In this episode, Jason Roach is joined by Tony Uddin, pastor of Tower Hamlets Community Church, and Phil Woolley, pastor of Rye Lane Chapel. Drawing on decades of leadership in urban areas, they explore how churches can navigate demographic, cultural and generational change with wisdom, patience and love.

Tony and Phil discuss the importance of grounding change in prayer, Scripture and a compelling vision of where God is leading. They explain why leaders need to assess their church honestly, bring people with them gradually and create space for different voices to shape the journey.

They also examine practical cross-cultural challenges, from language barriers and contrasting communication styles to assumptions about class, leadership and belonging. Tony and Phil share how diverse leadership, loving relationships and a willingness to become “comfortable being uncomfortable” can help churches move beyond tokenism, and towards genuine intercultural life.

This episode encourages churches to see change not simply as a source of disruption, but as an opportunity to reflect their communities, deepen discipleship and join in God’s mission.

“The Holy Spirit’s like a river. He will meander and move where he chooses, and it’s for us to keep up with him and where he leads us.”

– Phil Whoolley
