“Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.” — Psalm 96:1
Psalm 96 is a call to worship – but not just for individuals, or even for Israel alone. It’s a global, all-encompassing invitation for every nation and all creation to lift their voices in praise to the living God.
Whether your weekend was restful or stressful, filled with joy or burdened by grief, this psalm gently reorients us. It reminds us that our God is good, and more than that, He reigns. The world may feel like it’s in turmoil – headlines may shake us, and personal struggles can weigh heavy – but none of these things change the truth that God is on His throne.
The psalmist gives us a reason to sing:
“Proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvellous deeds among all peoples.” (vv. 2–3)
God’s greatness isn’t confined to the past. His saving work continues today – in lives being transformed, in churches being planted, in quiet faithfulness behind closed doors, and in bold witness on the streets of our cities. Even in places of persecution, like North Korea or Iran, and in the darkest corners of our own communities – among young people gripped by fear or caught in cycles of violence – the gospel is advancing.
Psalm 96 doesn't simply celebrate God’s glory – it commands us to share it.
“Say among the nations, ‘The Lord reigns.’” (v.10)
This is not just a private truth for believers to cling to – it’s a public declaration for the whole world to hear. It is a message of both hope and judgment. Hope, because the Lord is coming to make things right. Judgment, because He will do so in righteousness and truth.
We don’t have to fear that. We can rejoice in it.
“Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad… Let all creation rejoice before the Lord, for he comes.” (vv. 11–13)
Even creation responds in worship. The trees sing. The fields are jubilant. The sea resounds. If even the natural world longs for His coming, how much more should we?
In a world where so much feels fragile or temporary, Psalm 96 invites us to lift our gaze to the eternal – to the One who rules with justice and truth, whose salvation is for all people. This psalm rekindles our worship, refocuses our witness, and renews our confidence in God’s rule.
Let’s not be silent. Let’s sing. Let’s speak. Let’s rejoice.
A prayer
Lord, thank you that in a world of uncertainty, you remain the unshakable King. Help us to worship you with joy and to proclaim your salvation with boldness. Let our lives reflect your glory, and may our churches be places where the nations hear the good news: the Lord reigns. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
