Today London City Mission marks 180 years of gospel ministry to the least reached in London.

On Saturday 16 May, 1835, at a time when the mortality rate amongst cholera sufferers was rising and many charitable organisations were leaving the slums, London City Mission came into existence.

Baptist Wriothesley Noel, a man of action, had started a regular gathering of ministers for prayer and sharing about the best ways to reach the poor with the Christian gospel. It was this prayer meeting that led to a growing gospel call for evangelism and action in London’s slums and resulted in the foundation of the London City Mission.

Our mandate back then was to ‘extend the knowledge of the gospel among the inhabitants of London (especially the poor), without any reference to denominational distinctions’.

London City Mission continues to reach out and share the gospel with the city’s least reached – the poor, the marginalised and the immigrant communities. With its calling to go to those who would not come to church, London City Mission and its ministry has never been needed more!

A message of good news!

We share the good news of Jesus Christ with people like 64 year old Salvatore in Battersea.

Salvatore was in contact with our missionaries for 30 years before he accepted Jesus to be his Lord and saviour last year.

Watch our latest video to listen to his full testimony.

Graham Miller, our Chief Executive said: "We praise God for the way he used our missionaries to patiently, sensitively and individually share the gospel with Salvatore, year in year out, until the Holy Spirit convicted Salvatore of his need for Christ. It’s not easy and our prayer is that the Holy Spirit will equip our workers with the word of truth to bring more people like Salvatore to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ."

In partnership with The Bridge church in Battersea, London City Missionaries continue to meet regularly with Salvatore to help encourage and support him as he lives out his new faith.

Mission Sunday

Tomorrow, churches across the UK and Ireland will join together for Mission Sunday. This is a time to remember all that God has done and is doing through London City Mission. It particularly focuses on the story of Salvatore and how he came to faith.

Your can order a resource pack to share about the work of London City Mission in your church. Please contact Andrew Down (020 7234 3590 or churches@lcm.org.uk) or by visit our Mission Sunday webpage.
