Thought retirement was the end?

Just after the Second World War, a young girl became a Christian through attending London City Mission meetings. Fast forward 56 years and now she serves with her husband on LCM’s volunteer scheme, Urban Track, having travelled in the meantime through Spain, Peru, Venezuela and America. |

Joyce and David Moffett joined the Urban Track scheme in January 2004, intending to work with LCM for a year. As they approached the end of this time they felt assured that God was calling them to stay in London and are now beginning their second year. David, originally from Vermont, America, works at Whitefoot Lane Christian Centre in Downham and Joyce splits her time between there and Malham Christian Centre in Forest Hill.
David and Joyce were both called to missionary service independently of each other and met in Peru. Over the years they began to realise that God was leading them to join their lives together, and in 1969, in the small village of Chincha Alta in Peru, David and Joyce were married.
In 1978 the Moffetts, now with three sons, moved to Florida until God led them to Venezuela before settling them in Florida again. A visit to England in 2001 introduced them to Urban Track, which they saw mentioned in Span. Urban Track is a scheme for Christians over 35 who have retired or taken time out from work and feel God’s call to serve Him in London. Joyce says, “As we considered this opportunity for retirees to give a year working with the London City Mission, we felt that this was something that God would have us do. After all, retirement was just around the corner and we did not want to spend it sitting on rocking chairs! As long as the Lord gave us health and strength we wanted to use it for Him. Not only that, it would be a way of saying thank you to LCM for the input that they had in my life. After much prayer and a further visit to London it was agreed that we would serve with LCM for a year. On 2 January 2004 we retired from our jobs in the States and one week later flew to England to begin our year with LCM.” |
