London Embankment Mission

The Mission's current work with homeless people grew out of the old London Embankment Mission (LEM).

The LEM helped vast numbers of homeless people in London for over fifty years. A short history has been written as a tribute to the many men and women who were a part of this outreach.  The workers were all Christians and so had the benefit of God’s strength, but there must have been times when they felt the stresses of their job.  Those who gave up their time and energy to help the ‘down-and-outs’ therefore deserve praise and thanks.  As Jesus said, “As you did it to the least of my brethren, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:40)  Special mention must be made of Ernest Walton-Lewsey, whose vision inspired the early activities of what became the Embankment Mission, and whose support continued through most of the Mission’s independent existence.
